Second boat found in Naples
January 15th, 2004
The second boat has been found close to the previous in the same
excavations in the City Hall square in Naples.
This new boat has identical dimensions (10 meters
long and 2 meters wide) compared with the first found few days ago, and
many theories come to the mind to justify the presence of them.
Could be that these boats were used to reach big ships that were not able
to enter the sea port and download goods from them.
Among the items are coins, glass bottles still uncorked with the organic
material perfectly preserved, intact amphorae and soles of seafarers'
shoes, probably tossed away when they were no longer good.
Also found by the ship were seafarer's tools, such as needles to darn the
nets, ropes, nails, hooks, stone anchors, and ancient lamps to attract
fish at night.
